As our name suggests, we love dissecting how the mind works. One of the things we've discovered is that the way the mind communicates best is through stories. MindWorks Over Matters explores those stories. The medium may change – video, e-Learning, training, web, or event management – but in the end, when you talk about how the mind works, it’s all about the story.
How can a mother know something is wrong with her child without concrete evidence? “A Mother’s Intuition” is not a new idea or saying, but it is gaining momentum as a study topic for psychiatrists. Of significant interest is that mothers simply seem to know when something is wrong without any proof to back up their assumptions. Even more amazing is that most of the time, they are right.

I don’t want to stir up scary thoughts, but I thought this look into the mind of a house robber was fascinating. Rudolph Zinn, a professor at the University of South Africa’s College of Law, interviewed convicted house robbers to gain insight on why they steal, and how they gather “intel.” All of this material was collected for a study which was later turned into his new book “Home Invasion.” One of the most interesting tidbits: Robbers like to strike when the victims are home. Sorry for the shivers.

Rosie O’Donnell’s son Blake was struggling until a telling moment showed her that he was having trouble processing the sounds he was hearing. That’s the challenge for children with auditory processing disorder, a poorly understood syndrome that interferes with the brain’s ability to recognize and interpret sounds. It’s been estimated that 2 to 5 percent of children have the disorder. Rosie recounts Blake’s journey to “learn how to learn.”

There’s hope for us yet! In her new book, “The Secret Life of The Grown-Up Brain,” Barbara Strauch details studies that suggest that the middle-aged brain is not on a steady decline, and actually improves in a number of areas as time passes.

This “60 Minutes” story from March 14th is a perfect example of the vast mysteries of the mind. It also teaches us that certain limitations don’t necessarily limit human potential. Born blind and autistic, Derek Paravicini is a deeply gifted musician. His abilities on the piano are so profound they’ve left many masters shaking their head in disbelief. The unique part of this story is that Derek may be as talented as he is because of his autism and blindness. Since he has been unable to depend on his sense of sight since birth, his auditory abilities may have been forced to compensate and grow.
